NATIONAL TRAILS DAY & Poker Hike!

On National Trails Day, Saturday,  June 3, the New Mexico Rails-to-Trails Association will open the Bonnie Brooks property for viewing the area’s newest historical site, BONNIE’S TRESTLE, currently undergoing restoration. Besides a close-up view of the trestle work, the property also offers a walk to the Mexican Canyon Trestle over a near-pristine section of original railbed not often available to the public. Gates are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with refreshments and displays available at Bonnie’s cabin, near the trestle. To access the venue, start from the Depot at the Trestle Recreation Area in Cloudcroft, and follow the signs to Bonnie’s Trestle. The area will also be open on Sunday the 4th, and three weekends during the summer season, July 8 & 9, August 5 & 6, and September 9 & 10.

And, if you want to add some adventure to your Saturday, join the free Poker Hike that Rails-to-Trails is also sponsoring in conjunction with the Brooks property opening.  The hike is only 1.3 miles long – perfect for a family. Start any time between 9 am and 11 am at the Trestle Recreation Area, and turn your poker hand in at the 5th and last stop – Bonnie’s cabin – any time before 12:30 pm. Winners will be announced at 12:45 pm, with prizes for the three best 5-card poker hands. Winners need NOT be present! This is not a race – winning is strictly by chance. Take your time and enjoy the hike.

Volunteer Work Day – September 24th!

What we’ll be doing

This month we’re enjoying Cloudcroft on the Brooks property before the winter months hit us. The retaining wall for the cabin on the Brook’s property has been completed, and it looks really good! Now we need to do backfill behind the wall and add topsoil. We also will be working on the steps and doing some general straightening up. There will be work for everybody. This will be the last workday this year in this locality, so come help finish this off right.

Again, we will have shirts and caps with the NEW NM Rails-to-Trails Association logo on sale when we gather up!

Again, we’ll be walking down to the worksite from the parking area, detailed below.

When & Where for the Work day

Saturday, September 24th, 2016. We’ll meet at 9am and we’ll work until noon.

Driving Directions

Head on up to Cloudcroft as you normally would. We’ll be parking and meeting at the Village Spur Trailhead parking area where Highway 130 intersects with Highway 82. It’s easy to spot there on your right just as you enter Cloudcroft if coming in from High Rolls or Alamogordo.

Volunteer Work Day – Aug 20th!

What we’ll be doing

This month we’re enjoying Cloudcroft yet again on the Brooks property. We will be completing the last section of the retaining wall below the cabin, doing back-fill, and getting ready to add the topsoil. This has been hard work, but the wall is looking really professional.

Again, we will have shirts and caps with the NEW NM Rails-to-Trails Association logo on sale when we gather up!

Again, we’ll be walking down to the worksite from the parking area, detailed below.

Volunteer Work Day – July 23rd!

What we’ll be doing

This month we’re enjoying Cloudcroft again! Most of our work will concentrate on continuation of the retaining wall construction below the cabin on the Bonnie Brooks property – hard work, but the end is in sight. We will also have some lighter work that needs to be done so there will be something for everybody.

Again, we will have shirts and caps with the NEW NM Rails-to-Trails Association logo on sale when we gather up!

Again, we’ll be walking down to the worksite from the parking area, detailed below.

Volunteer Work Day – May 21st!

What we’ll be doing

This month we’re enjoying Cloudcroft again to continue work building the railroad tie retaining wall below the cabin on the Brooks Property. This is hard going and we need several strong folks to trade-off the heavier work.

PLUS, we will be doing some minor trail clean-up, and we will continue work on Bonnie’s Bridge – re-treating the wood, reseating some of the bridge railings, and putting caps on the vertical members to prevent deterioration. This is MUCH less strenuous work than the retaining wall but still necessary, so feel free to come just to work on this.
