Workday – September 21st!

What we’ll be doing: We will be working the trail near Bridal Veil Falls, mostly repairing water bars and clearing drainage problems resulting from the recent excessive rains. We may also do some brush trimming, tread work and similar general trail maintenance. The weather should be nice on Saturday and not too hot.  As always, please be sure to bring drinking water, sun protection, work gloves and sturdy boots. All tools will be provided. We have work for ALL skill levels!

When/Where: Saturday, September 21st 2013. Meet at 9am at the Harris Hollow gate area (directions below). We’ll walk downhill from there to the Falls and work areas. We have special permission from the private land owner to use this shortcut. We plan to work until noon.

Directions to the Harris Hollow Gate from Hwy 82 in High Rolls (click this link for a Google map): The Harris Hollow gate is north of High Rolls. From Hwy 82 in High Rolls, turn north at the High Rolls General store onto Cherry Blossom Lane for .3 miles, the west (left) at the stop sign onto Cottage Row. Drive .45 miles and turn north (right) onto Fresnal Canyon Road and travel 1.4 miles to Harris Hollow, which is tucked away on a curve to the west (on the right). Look for our parked cars.

If you’ve never been to Bridal Veil Falls, this is a great opportunity; and if you have, this is a much easier and quicker way to access it!

Thanks!

AUGUST 2013 WORKDAY SUCCESS

There was a great turn out for our monthly volunteer work day! This month we had 18 folks to help out with the Rim Trail; some of our volunteers were big and some were small, but everyone pitched in! We ended up splitting into two groups. One groups started on the Rim Trail at the trailhead a little over a mile south of Cloudcroft. The other group drove a bit further south and hiked down some steep terrain to access the trail further south. As the first group worked their way south, the other worked northwards and we eventually met in the middle. All in all, the trail was already in pretty good shape. There was a few sections that need some minor work and a stretch that got quite a bit of brush trimmed back. Overall, we covered almost 2 miles of trail.

We can certainly check off the first 2 miles of the Rim Trail off of our list for a while. Thanks everyone for the hard work and we hope to see you out with us again!

Workday – August 17th!

What we’ll be doing: Brush trimming, tread work, water bars and similar general maintenance on parts of the Rim Trail. The Rim Trail runs from Cloudcroft to Sunspot. We worked some of this trail back in June but some more areas need attending. Reminder: this area is high altitude, so it shouldn’t be too terribly hot. As always, please be sure to bring drinking water, sun protection, work gloves and sturdy boots. All tools will be provided. We have work for ALL skill levels!

When/Where: Saturday, August 17th 2013. Meet at 9am at the Sacramento District Ranger Office. We plan to work until noon.

Directions to the Sacramento District Ranger Office: Enter Cloudcroft from Alamogordo on Highway 82 and take an immediate right (head South) onto NM130. Travel about one mile and the Ranger Station will be on the right. We’ll gather up in the parking lot.
