Volunteer Work Day – July 23rd!

What we’ll be doing

This month we’re enjoying Cloudcroft again! Most of our work will concentrate on continuation of the retaining wall construction below the cabin on the Bonnie Brooks property – hard work, but the end is in sight. We will also have some lighter work that needs to be done so there will be something for everybody.

Again, we will have shirts and caps with the NEW NM Rails-to-Trails Association logo on sale when we gather up!

Again, we’ll be walking down to the worksite from the parking area, detailed below.

When & Where for the Work day

Saturday, July 23rd, 2016. We’ll meet at 9am and we’ll work until noon.

Driving Directions

Head on up to Cloudcroft as you normally would. We’ll be parking and meeting at the Village Spur Trailhead parking area where Highway 130 intersects with Highway 82. It’s easy to spot there on your right just as you enter Cloudcroft if coming in from High Rolls or Alamogordo.

Historical Route to the Mexican Canyon Trestle!

On July 9 and 10, 2016, the historical, scenic, and shorter route to the Mexican Canyon Trestle through the Brooks property will be open from 9 am to 4 pm.  This trail passes by “Bonnie’s Trestle,” the area’s newest National Historical Site, and across the porch of a beautiful cabin built directly on the original rail bed.  This opportunity, available this year only on July 9 and 10, August 6 and 7, and September 10 and 11,  provides a really up-close view of the trestle, currently undergoing stabilization and recovery.

To reach the site, go to the Depot Recreation Area on the west edge of Cloudcroft, take Trail 5001B until it merges into Trail 5000, and continue to the marked gate…less than 1/2 mile, total.  Its only about another 1/3 mile to the Mexican Canyon Trestle overlook.

NATIONAL TRAIL DAYS CELEBRATION – Sat, June 4th at 11:00am

Come on out on NATIONAL TRAILS DAY, Saturday, June 4th, at 11:00am to help us celebrate Cloudcroft’s newest NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE!!!

Bonnie’s Trestle, located on the Brooks Property just up the trail from the Mexican Canyon Trestle has officially been designated a National Historic Site. We’ll be throwing a small celebration with free refreshments and will provide a great “behind-the-scenes” tour of our ongoing efforts to preserve the “Little Trestle That Stood!”

The easiest way to get there is to head over the old Cloudcroft Depot and hike down T5001B and T5001 just like you were going to the Mexican Canyon Trestle. On the way, just keep an eye out for our signs and stay on the wide Railbed trail! The gates to the trestle will be open from 9am till 4pm, but again, we hope to see you at the celebration at 11:00am!
